Making of

This digital painting was for me the opportunity to practice the crucial component of painting: the light. Usually the light always come form the top left or top right side. Having a light coming from the bottom of the face change the usual shadow areas we take for granted when draw. It was an interesting exercise of observation without “interpreting” the image to draw.

In Rome city, some streets are very small and looking up, an entire new world appears. I couldn’t resist to take this picture appreciating the perspective and the dynamic aspect of it. At that moment I still didn’t know what to do with it.

Then of course by the dynamic aspect I choose a dynamic situation: Falling down!

But no worries, no harm happened to her in this shot. :-)

Such a great opportunity to take pictures of people taking pictures! The perfect moment is when the subject is out of the frame like in this case: on a very touristic bridge, (in front of the Castel Sant’Angelo in Rome), the subject being a castle, is far away from the guys. I immediately thought about the scene of my digital character girl being framed by this couple. I then took the picture behind them letting some room in the frame to insert the girl later on.

Then I wanted to make the scene funnier with the girl making a weird face rather than making  a more boring top model shot.

And what about using a famous Disney’s character, (thanks Glen Keane), for creating this fountain scene in Piazza del Popolo - Rome.

My initial idea was to create something with my typical character girl with the fountain, then while I was taking the picture, the old lady came into the frame for just sitting in the corner. What was initial considered as a failed pict turned to be a great one. The woman eye contact with the fountain create the perfect opportunity to make the interactivity between her and my digital character. Then came the idea of Ariel at ease like taking a bath which according to me fit perfectly in this scene.

After doing my regular sketches from model, I wanted to stop by this one. I liked this quite bended pose and I then try to play around with colors and experiencing no rational colors and brushes. So the colored version is a pure emotional work without any light and shadow rules applied to it. It was funny to paint with.

One day after taking the tramway, I thought about the idea to draw my character going out as well. So I waited on that tramway station for the next one for taking the picture.

Then, drawing her, I thought about the idea to make her going out the tramway carefully a little scared. Don’t ask me why, maybe for having a less obvious scene.

I’m keeping going with the mixing reality with total free digital painting. This time in the bus, I couldn’t resist to take a picture, quite simple, he was sleeping so deeply. My purpose wasn’t to have fun of him but just to make him part of the layout of the picture and inserting a character with a cute reaction to this scene. I took this pict in a bus in Rome city.

I’m quite interested about mixing reality with total free digital painting. I then keep going on with this series of mixture of these 2 arts: I took a pict in the famous Piazza del Popolo in Rome. I tried to get the connection between the real people and my character as if she was really there.
